Event Description

This workshop is designed for those who have always wanted to, but have never dared to pick up a soldering iron!

Ok, maybe that’s a bit extreme, it’s most likely just one of those things you’ve never got round to having a go at. This workshop will change that. It will give you the essential knowledge and skills to get you making and repairing your own creative projects.

In this 1-day workshop, you will be guided through the basics of soldering and leave having made your very own instrument cable and simple fuzz pedal, which you get to take away with you.

All equipment and components will be provided and you will be expertly guided through the workshop by Jon Tipler, owner of Loaded for Bear Audio, a bespoke cable and studio assembly business that operated between 2019-2024.

Beginning with demonstrations on basic soldering techniques, you will have plenty of opportunity to learn and practice soldering with a variety of cable gauges, printed circuit boards (PCB’s) and electrical components.

During this workshop you will learn about:

  • essential health and safety considerations and risk assessment
  • the essential tools, equipment and accessories required for cable assembly and simple electronics projects
  • soldering irons and soldering stations
  • solder composition and how to select an appropriate product
  • soldering workflow and best practice
  • cable construction and selecting an appropriate product
  • cable preparation
  • basic soldering techniques
  • component and PCB preparation
  • through-hole soldering techniques
  • off-board component soldering
  • problem-solving and simple testing

Frequently asked questions

Will the workshop cover circuit function and design?

No, not really. The workshop is designed to be a very practical session, where you will find opportunity to learn new skills, make mistakes and have some fun.

Jon will identify and direct you towards plenty of resources for further exploration and learning in your own time following on from the workshop.

Do I need to have previous soldering experience?

No, not at all. This workshop is designed for absolute beginners. In fact, please do not book a place if you do have previous experience because you may not find it of great value.

Please contact me for a chat if you have any specific questions.

Do I need to bring anything with me?

No, all equipment and components will be provided.

Is there a minimum age requirement to join the workshop?

Yes, the workshop is for people aged 18 or over.

Health & Safety Info

In this workshop, you will be using soldering irons that can reach temperatures of up to 380 degrees celcius.

Dedicated holders to safely rest your soldering iron in will be provided at each workstation.

Extraction fans will be provided to minimise the risk of inhaling solder and flux fumes. We will be using RoHS compliant lead free (and rosin free subject to availibility) solder.

Eye protection will be provided and must be worn at all times when soldering.

A fully stocked burns first-aid kit will be on-site in the event of accidents. Most soldering accidents tend to be minor, first-degree burns that can be treated and managed effectively.

Hot molton solder can spit and drip. Please wear cotton or natural fibre clothing that covers your arms and legs. Do not wear synthetic clothing.

If you have any other concerns regarding health and safety, please do get in touch prior to booking.

Dates & Times

Time: 09:00 - 18:00

There are currently two dates available:

Saturday 24th October 2026

Sunday 25th October 2026

There will be plenty of time for refreshment breaks and there will be a 1 hour lunch break.

Location & Accessibility

The workshop will take place in the very lovely art studio of local artist Jave Bere, situated in the old mill town of Hebden Bridge (HX7), West Yorkshire. Address details will provided after your booking has been confirmed.

The studio is on the second floor of an old mill, accessible via four flights of stairs.

There is a stair lift serving the stairs in three sections, but please only book if you are confident using this. There is no elevator. in the building.

Please visit Hebden Bridge Disability Access Forum for further information and resources to help plan your visit to the town.

Getting Here & Accommodation

Hebden Bridge is situated in the Calder Valley, somewhere between Manchester and Leeds.

It has good rail links and the station is only a 15-20 minute walk from the studio.

Driving is possible, but be aware, parking is very restricted in the town centre, especially at weekends and I highly advise against it.

There are plenty of options should you need a place to stay (Hebden is a nice place to make a weekend of it!). Here are a couple of starting points:

IOU Hostel: independant accommodation for artists and visitors

HebWeb: local messageboard, news and ads

Hebden Townhouse: central boutique B&B

The White Lion: central hotel, pub and restaurant
